Transnet Electrical Fitter Apprenticeships Opportunities


Apprenticeship Contracts available for employment, with the purpose to provide young workers who have completed their compulsory schooling with general, theoretical and practical training with a view to obtaining a vocational qualification backed up by a Technical / artisan certificate (NQF level 5).

Apprenticeships are based on the principle of alternance between theoretical training in an Apprentice Training Centre and learning the profession with the employers the apprentice has signed their contract with.
The Apprentice, Electrical Fitter focus on Locomotives 
NO accommodation and transport assistance will be provided before, during and after appointment
This is only a training opportunity. On successful completion of the training program, there is no guarantee for permanent employment and trainees might be released to look for work in the market.

Position outputs 
  • Undergo on-the-job exposure for Transnet as part of the learning process;
  • Is available for and participates in all learning and work experience required by the Registered Apprentice Curriculum;
  • Comply with Transnet‘s workplace policies and procedures;
  • Complete logbook, or any written assessment tools supplied by Transnet and or a Training Provider to record relevant workplace experience, and;
  • Attend all study periods and theoretical learning sessions with the training provider and undertake all learning conscientiously.
  • The Apprentice will be required to commence duty as an employee at Transnet within thirty (30) days after acquiring the qualification and will be obliged to remain in the full-time service of Transnet for an uninterrupted binding period in a position and at a centre determined by Transnet, of one month for each month of training, thereafter the Apprentice, will be relieved from the obligation to repay to Transnet, any money paid to him in terms of this Agreement. This commencement of service will also be subject to the sole discretion of Transnet which shall be dependent on the availability of resources and business requirements of Transnet at the time of when the apprentice is required to fulfil this service.
  • If the Apprentice does not accept employment with Transnet or does not complete the agreed training period or is dismissed before completion of aforementioned service period, he will be obliged within 3 (three) months from the date of termination of the Agreement to repay the total amount paid to or on behalf of the Apprentice per annum for training cost incurred by Transnet during the P1 and P2 Training; minus (one) month for each completed month of service period after completion of the training program.
Qualifications & Experience :
  • NTC2 with 4 relevant trade subjects passed or
  • National Certificate (Vocational) Qualification NQF Level 3 or higher with relevant 7 subjects passed or
  • Technical Matric including Pure Mathematics and Physical Science passed with relevant trade theory

  • Safe working practices and principles

  • Business principles
  • Mechanical – Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, benefits, repair, and maintenance
  • Technical knowledge / Background
  • Safety procedures and equipment

  • Applicants must be SA citizens without any other bursary obligation from other organisations.
  • Preference will be given to applicants considered as South African Youth (under the age of 35).
  • Preference will be given to applicants with outstanding results.
  • Appointments will be made in terms of the Company’s Employment Equity Plan and Recruitment and Selection Policy.
  • All training will be done in the relevant Transnet School of Engineering Campus.
